Along with the grey reef shark and the whitetip reef shark , the blacktip reef shark is one of the three most common sharks inhabiting coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific. This species predominates in shallow habitats, while the other two are mostly found deeper. Fast-swimming and active, the blacktip reef shark may be encountered alone or in small groups; large "social" aggregations have also been observed.

The blacktip reef shark is a solid pick if you’re after a classic Indo-Pacific species—it holds its own in shallow, coral-heavy setups without getting skittish. Mine’s been active from day one, and the way it patrols the tank’s lower third is exactly what you’d expect from a reef predator.

I was surprised by how agile this shark is in shallow water — it navigates the coral maze effortlessly. The distinct black tips on its fins make it easy to spot even when it's moving fast. A really impressive predator to observe in its natural habitat.

Watching the blacktip reef shark glide through the shallows, I was struck by how distinct its fin markings are—those black tips really stand out against the water. It’s easily the most active shark in the tank, constantly patrolling the coral edges. A solid choice for anyone fascinated by reef speci
